Over the years shows that the polar ice caps in the Arctic and in the Antarctic melt away dramatically . Only within the last 20 years, the ice at the North and South Pole has decreased by 4.000 billion tons. Show satellite measurement methods that the mass in some regions , although increasing, but volatilizes dramatically cut. During the ice sheet in Greenland is losing 152 billion tons of example on ice per year , the ice sheet increases by 59 billion tons in East Antarctica . The reasons for this have not yet been researched.
That any resulting meltwater leaves the mirror of the world’s oceans to rise dramatically. Taking all ice regions together , this caused an increase in sea level of about 5.5 cm since the year 1993. This rate could be up to the end of the 21st Century rise to dramatic 1.9 meters .
This fact would threaten nearly half of the world’s population. The U.S. alone , a higher sea level would cost more than 150 billion dollars. Smaller countries in the Pacific Ocean would even completely sink into the sea .
Blame for the polar cap melt is not only the increase in global temperature . Billions of tons of ice is also simply undermined by melt water and so become free , to separate and dissolve the so-called Ice Shelf, the Haupteisschicht which is connected to the mainland .
Since this process is more and more become independent in the near future , it is increasingly important to fight against it . You just have to begin .
